Be kind
I am a working guy
with little want for pets,
partly because they spend
so much time seeing local vets.
Someday soon I will retire
and some money I will have
to spend upon my heart's desire,
what is not spent on salve.
When finally I do retire
I know just what I'll do.
I'll find a loving pet
and I will call it Hugh.
I don't want a normal pet
that lives within my house.
I don't want a dog, a cat,
or even a thoroughbred mouse.
The animal I want
will live within the sea.
As ugly as it is,
I'll befrend a manatee.
I'll throw it fish
which I shall catch
as I cast my line
while walking on the beach.
When I finally go my way
Hugh will need a friend to see
So then please visit my pet and, please,
Be kind to Hugh manatee.
