Wednesday - fun - age of the earth
There is a product of our interaction with the sun's rays called Carbon-14 (or C-14). It is not stable and from the information that I can find, every 5730 years 1/2 of the C-14 will disintegrate. The annual rate of decay to accomplish that is 0.00012. In other words, 0.99988 ^ 5730 is 0.502. Please note that every calculator I use gives a different result. You can find out more about
C-14 here.
Long ago I located numbers which enumerated the current ratio of creations to decays. I can not document the numbers I will use but I have used them in discussions on various forums and not had any contest. Additionally, as you will see, the numbers I will present seem validated because the results matches the current graphs. The numbers I have are 22 creations to 17 decays per second. From the above Wickipedia source one can quickly verify that the creation rate is assumed to be quite stable except for a short time in the 1960s when some were man-made.
The question that comes to mind is "At what point in the cronology of the earth were there enough C-14 atoms accumulated to support a decay ratio of 17/22?" Following is a table which shows the number of years elapsed to accumulate enough to support a decay ratio for odd values of 1/22 through 17/22. Please ignore the bottom row for the moment.
| decays per second | year of accumulation | ||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 | x | ||||||||
| 15 | x | ||||||||
| 13 | x | ||||||||
| 11 | x | ||||||||
| 9 | x | ||||||||
| 7 | x | ||||||||
| 5 | x | ||||||||
| 3 | x | ||||||||
| 1 | x | ||||||||
| elapsed DC/BC/AD* | 389 389dc | 1223 1223dc | 2150 2150dc | 3193 3193dc | 4385 4385dc | 5777 5777dc | 7450 2550bc | 9544 556bc | 12347 2347ad |
*DC = During Creation, BC = Before Christ, AD = Anno Domini
The above information would hardly be important except that it so accurately fits the creation account!!. If there are 1000 years to the Lord's day then 6 days (6000 years) of creation plus 6000 years (6 days) of human history is 12,000 years. And that is important because of a scientific rule which says one should always take the simplest explanation of an issue. If one views the table in section 4.1 (labeled "The need for calibration") of the Wikipdeia reference then it is clear that the measured years are almost exactly actual years. What I mean is that the recalibrated range from 2000 AD to 5000 BC is about 6000 years so that if the graph was extended back to 10000 BC then the y-axis would be around 12,000 actual - which quite closely fits my graph above!!
It seems apparent that life could not exist without atmosphere but I will state that for the record.
I welcome any feedback on this and will include it with permission.
Love,
G'pa Bob
Note: I used a simple interest formula in the form new_accumulation = old_accumulation - decays + 22(creations) to get the accumulation in that second at the end of each successive year.
